How to Avoid Burnout While Working from Home

With a major shift to work from home this year, many have had to build a new routine to ensure productivity in their adjusted environments. As months have passed and working remotely has remained prevalent, we have all continued to adjust to a new normal. Feeling trapped at home can be overwhelming and mixing home life with work can make it feel hard to unwind.

According to CNBC, over two-thirds, or 69%, of employees are experiencing burnout symptoms while working from home. That is up almost 20% from a similar survey conducted in early May. With stress levels at an all-time high, it is important to find outlets that allow you to relax and avoid burnout. Taking one or more of these steps could help you find a routine that works better for your schedule and environment.

  1. Schedule Breaks

In between meetings on a long day, block off 15-30 minutes to decompress. Step away from the computer, go for a quick walk, get yourself a coffee and you’ll be off to your next zoom meeting recharged.

  1. Make Time for Exercise

Now that it’s fall, the weather is perfect for an outdoor run. With the cooler weather, you can squeeze in a workout on your lunch break. If that’s not your thing, there are thousands of workouts available for free on YouTube. Check out popular full body core from Chloe Ting or yoga from Blogilates.

  1. Set Space Aside

If you are working from your bedroom, it is easy to start associating that space with productivity and even stress. Dedicating a specific area of your home to work draws a boundary between work and rest, helping you take a break from work on your evenings and weekends. If separating a space for work is not possible, try changing your outfit to give yourself a sense of a difference and change back into comfortable lounge clothing after clocking out.

  1. Try a Meditation App

Meditation apps are a great way to practice mindfulness and unwind before bed. Apps like Headspace and Calm have gained popularity in the last few months and offer guided meditations, ambient music and sleep guidance.

  1. Find One Thing a Week to Look Forward to

Pick a day of the week to treat yourself. It could be something as small as lighting your favorite candle and taking a long bath, ordering your favorite take-out to share with a friend, or a dedicated movie night with all the best snacks.

The timeline for a full transition back to office life is uncertain, so it is crucial to find a work from home routine that works for your present circumstance. Every situation is different, but if you are feeling a little overwhelmed from work lately, this could be a good place to start.
