AMBIR Expands AmbirScan Web Connect to Mac and Speeds Up Driver’s License and ID Scanning

Web developers can now add one-click scanning and instant ID data capture to browser-based applications on both Windows and macOS.

Wood Dale, IL — [Release date], 2026 — AMBIR Technology today announced a major update to AmbirScan Web Connect, its SDK and local client that connects physical scanners directly to web applications. The update adds full macOS support and faster 2D barcode processing, making it quicker to capture driver’s license and ID data straight into any browser-based workflow.

Web browsers cannot talk to scanners on their own. AmbirScan Web Connect closes that gap with a lightweight local app and a single JavaScript file. Users click “Scan” in their web application, and the document or card goes straight in. There is no saving files, switching windows, or uploading.

Now on Mac

AmbirScan Web Connect now runs on macOS 13 Ventura and later, on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It works in Chrome, Edge, and Safari, and supports AMBIR sheetfed scanners through their ICA (Apple Image Capture) drivers. Enterprise customers can also connect third-party scanners that have an ICA driver.

IT teams can deploy the Mac version at scale with a .pkg installer through Jamf, Intune, or any MDM. The app starts automatically at login and its security certificate is trusted in Keychain, so users don’t have to set anything up. On Windows, AmbirScan Web Connect continues to support TWAIN scanners and silent MSI deployment.

Faster ID scanning

Identity capture is one of the most common uses for AmbirScan Web Connect. Improved 2D barcode processing now reads the PDF417 barcode on North American driver’s licenses and state IDs faster. The SDK returns parsed fields, including name, date of birth, address, license number, and expiration date, ready to fill a web form without retyping.

That speed matters at the front desk and the service counter, including:

  • Healthcare: patient check-in with ID and insurance card capture into EHR/EMR portals
  • Financial services: KYC identity verification for account opening and lending
  • Government: ID verification at permit, licensing, and citizen service counters

Private by design

All scanning and processing happens on the user’s own computer. The service runs only on localhost with encrypted HTTPS, and no scanned data passes through AMBIR servers. That keeps the scanning step clear of any new third parties, which is important for organizations under HIPAA, financial, and government compliance rules.

Availability and pricing

The updated AmbirScan Web Connect is available now for Windows and macOS. Scanning with AMBIR scanners is free. Barcode and ID parsing is available in the Barcode tier at $99 per workstation per year, and in the Professional ($149) and Enterprise ($249) tiers. The JavaScript SDK and sample code are MIT-licensed and available on GitHub. Details are at ambir.com/ambirscan-web-connect-sdk.
