More About WOW Carts /Mobile Carts
A WOW cart in a hospital stands for Workstation on Wheels.
It’s basically a mobile computer station that nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff can wheel from patient to patient. These carts usually include:
A computer or tablet for accessing the hospital’s electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Barcode scanner for scanning patient wristbands and medications.
Wristband/label printers
Storage drawers for medications, supplies, or paperwork.
Document/ID Scanner primarily used to scan a patient’s ID or Insurance card and attach to their record in EMR
Height-adjustable desk so staff can use it sitting or standing.
Purpose
WOW carts let staff document care, review charts, administer medications, and check test results right at the patient’s bedside, reducing errors and saving time compared to running back and forth to a nurses’ station.
They’re sometimes confused with COWs (“Computers on Wheels”), but many hospitals now use “WOW” because… well, “COW” wasn’t the friendliest nickname to call down a hallway.
